“Economic
Reforms” has been the Mantra de-jour in recent years. In
the wake of its first decade of “opening up”, India now
made full importation of Consumer goods easier and
relatively permissible under its Open General License
Policy. The direct and indirect import tariffs and taxes are
systematically brought down in compliance with WTO
directives.
This has culminated into an onslaught of imports, especially
consumer products, driven by an escalating demand curve
dictated by a sophisticated, English-speaking, informed and
well traveled urban middle class with an uncompromising
taste and attitude. |
